Dr Bateman worked on a range of clinical research projects. In June of 2016, a woman whose name was Miss Kelly spoke to an experienced community psychiatric nurse she wanted to commit suicide. She refused to be detained by the Mental Health Act but agreed to an assessment of her home treatment. However, the assessor was concerned that she could pose a danger to herself or others, and did not believe that she was competent enough to give consent.
The assessor then suggested that Miss Kelly should be held against the will of her. Miss Kelly was not keen to be admitted to a facility so she contacted her psychiatrist, Dr Ramanathan Elayaperumal. He was a Consultant Psychiatrist within the Home Treatment Team at Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
In response to this recommendation, the Home Treatment Team conducted a comprehensive evaluation of Miss Kelly's state of mind and her current functioning. The evaluation included an in-depth medical history and physical examination. It also included a thorough psychological and family therapy assessment and a psychiatric diagnostic interview.
According to the report Miss Kelly suffered from a number of mental health issues, such as the borderline personality disorder, bulimia and anorexia. She also had a history of drug misuse and had experienced domestic violence. Depression, anxiety, and stress caused her symptoms to worsen. She was also diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder as well as schizoaffective disorder.
Elayaperumal claims Medtronic discriminated against him intentionally because of his race or nationality. He claims that his poor performance review in June of 2000 as well as the decision not to give him certain projects assignments were motivated by racism. Medtronic has not provided any evidence that its decisions were based upon these elements. In addition, Elayaperumal's poor performance review didn't result in a reduction in his pay or benefits, or even his the responsibilities he had.
